Dr. Hinkin earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Air Force Academy in 1977, and received his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in May 1980. He completed an internship at USAF Medical Center, Scott AFB, Illinois in June 1981 and his residency at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, Lackland AFB, Texas in June 1985. He then completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the University of Iowa in June 1989.

Dr. Hinkin practiced orthopaedic surgery for the USAF from July 1985 to June 1997, and served as chief of sports medicine services at the USAF Academy prior to retirement in 1997. He then joined Drs. Baker, Jones, and Holiday at Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center.

Dr. Hinkin has been board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery since July 1986. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a board examiner for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a member of the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine, Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons, Mid-America Orthopaedic Association, Kansas Medical Society and Riley County Medical Society. He also serves in the physician pool for the US Ski Team and is a team physician for Kansas State University varsity sports.
